Getting more active... Tracking band, apps, and hula hoops!

Getting more active is not easy right now for me.  I cannot walk or stand for very long without pain.

I love swimming but it is not always very easy to get out and go.

I got the Honor 5 Band because I needed something to track how active I am including when I swim, but most trackers - like the Apple Watch or Fitbit - made for swimming are very expensive.  After quite a bit of research I discovered 2 that looked promising - the Moov and the Honor 5 Band.

According to my research:

The Moov is a tracker and training band that does not have a display.  It is a round disc that can be put in a wrist band, ankle band, head band, etc.  People complained that the disc is so light weight that they never realised they actually lost it.  It was available on Amazon for £45.

The Honor 5 Band has a display, and can receive notifications from phone (and social media), record workouts and track steps.  It is made by Huawei and cost £30 on Amazon.

This is from week 1 of wearing the tracking band... after the first time wearing it swimming.  It recorded the type of stroke I was doing and recorded a lot of helpful information.

It also is helping me to be more aware of how active I am, as it alerts me when I sit for too long.  It also celebrates with stars on the display when I reach a step target.
The Huawei app is easy to install and use.

It displays lots of information - tracking steps, calories burned and distance, sleep, heart beats, etc.

It became clear just how much more active I am on the weekends.
The Huawei app connects to Apple Health app, which connects to My WW app to record fit points.

Since I am now working from home, and cannot always swim. I needed to find other ways to be active.  So when the band alerts me I am sitting too long, I have been trying to do housework, but even that is not always possible.  I have tried to book time in my work calendar, 10 minutes in the morning and 10 minutes in the afternoon, outside of lunch to get away from the keyboard and move.

One of my problematic areas when I lose weight is my arms, as the skin just gets loose... so needed to find ways to deal with this.  I was watching a video of a woman hula hooping and her cat trying to catch the hoop.  It got me thinking that I could hula hoop with my arms.  On Amazon I found smaller hula hoops made specifically for this purpose.  They arrived today and all day I have been fiddling with them.  I have been enjoying them and actually have pretty good coordination.  I managed to do about 10 minutes of hooping with my arms, but inconsistent as could not keep my arms extended for very long before needing to rest them.

I will report later on further progress and my activity levels.

End of Week 4

So celebrated success yesterday at MyWW... I started this journey before weighing in at a MyWW meeting and so they only know about the weight I have lost since I joined, yesterday they recorded another pound lost which brought me to 7.5 lbs It has been challenging this week as I have worked from home all week due to COVID-19 and really did not leave the flat. I got this new activity tracker band, the Honor 5 Band made by Huawei, and was shocked to see the difference in my movements between weekends and weekdays (can be as much as 4x difference). I need to find ways during the week to get my activity levels up more.  However, I still lost this week and so will be adding another £1 to my £’s for lbs bottle! Am about to go and test my new tracking band at the pool, but have lost my swim buddy as fears of COVID-19 become more and more pronounced in the communities.  I am going today, but not sure whether I will continue, although it is one of the few w...

One week ends, and a new one just begun (a.k.a. Week 2)

This weekend was a bit varied.  I ended up being quite stressed. I worked quite a bit.  I visited with friends, I spent time with family. I got little sleep... and I went to my first meeting.  I may have mentioned in an early post (or maybe not) that I was referred back to weight management by my doctors surgery and so have 12 weeks of meetings free.  However, what I learned on Saturday morning was that they no longer want to be called Weight Watchers, now going by My WW.  The meeting was very enlightening... I came to find a group of people who were aligned well with what I am doing.  They now have 3 pillars behind their focus - Diet, Activity, and Mindset.  They emphasised that the word “diet” is not about losing weight, but what you eat and how much.  They talked about not making huge changes but small sustainable ones.  They discussed NSV - non- scale victories, as in going to a meeting, making a good choice, feeling good about yourself, ...

End of Week 2

It is Sunday, the end of week 2.  I finished my first week of My WW and weighed in yesterday.  Last Saturday I was 21 stone 8lbs and this Saturday I was 21 stone 5lbs... so lost 3lbs. This week, I have: been trying to eat smarter,  cut out a lot of my carbs and replaced them with fruit or veg,  stopped drinking calorie-filled drinks,  tried to be a bit more active.   So did something right, I guess.  Now let me see if it can be sustained. I will say that some days this week, I had a lot of Smart Points left over each day... so not sure if I am eating enough to fully fuel my body and most efficiently burn calories?  Today, I ate almost all my points... so will see how that goes. Lenny seems to be fascinated with things like oranges when he finds them, so got him some “healthy food” cat toys so he and Willow can be involved and supportive. Bring on Week 3!  (Soup for lunch made today - a beef and barley-type soup ...
